About us
At the San Francisco Math Circle, we make math accessible, inclusive, and fun!
The SF Math Circle is an extracurricular math enrichment program affiliated with the Center for Science and Math Education at San Francisco State University. SF Math Circle supports students from diverse backgrounds in developing their identities as capable, confident problem solvers.
In our after-school classes and camps, we provide a supportive, collaborative, and fun environment where students explore engaging, hands-on puzzles and games that involve both creativity and critical thinking.
Students explore these puzzles and games in small groups where they have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers and to receive personalized attention and support from SF Math Circle facilitators.

Please note that our focus is primarily on helping students to engage in creative mathematical exploration and problem-solving rather than building their skills in arithmetic or other traditional K-12 math.
Our Classes
Classes meet once per week and each class is 1 hour. Students spend the majority of the period exploring in small groups. There are typically 4-6 students and one facilitator per group.
While our classes have relatively large age ranges, our low-floor, high-ceiling activities and our small-group model (which allows us to group students by age) help to ensure that every student is able to explore in an age-appropriate way.
Cost & Financial Aid
The tuition for the Spring 2025 term of our SF State Math Circle is $300 per 10-week session.
We offer payment plans! If you opt for a payment plan, you can pay a portion of the full tuition upfront, and then pay the remaining amount in monthly installments.
If you're currently unable to afford the full tuition, we offer a limited number of reduced tuition scholarship spaces. In order to register for a scholarship, families must first complete ActivityHero's scholarship application and provide income verification.
(To complete the application, click on the link above, add the application to your cart, and then click the “Proceed to Checkout” button.)
After you have been approved for a scholarship by ActivityHero, you may register for a scholarship space. You may only register for a scholarship space after your scholarship application has been approved by ActivityHero. It may take ActivityHero up to a week to process and review your application, so if you will need financial aid, we encourage you to submit your scholarship application to ActivityHero ASAP.
If you applied for and received a scholarship for a 2024 class or camp, you must reapply for 2025 classes and / or camps — ActivityHero requires a new application for each calendar year. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Please note: ActivityHero is responsible for managing the scholarship application and approval process. If you have questions or are experiencing any difficulty, you can contact ActivityHero’s support team at https://help.activityhero.com/kb-tickets/new
Families who qualify for scholarship spaces will receive up to 90% reduced tuition (so they will pay only 10%). ActivityHero will determine the amount of the scholarship based on their review of the scholarship application.
Please note: We have a limited number of scholarship spaces available. If you are approved for a scholarship, you will only be able to register for a scholarship space if there is one available.
If you can afford to pay more than the standard tuition to help us offer financial aid to families in need, please select the option to donate $25 or $50 to our financial aid fund when registering.
If you'd like to donate more than $50 to our financial aid fund, you can do so via our Donate page.
The tuition we charge allows us to cover the costs of the resources we provide, including:
- Activity design and development
- Facilitator training and preparation
- Low student-to-facilitator ratios
We appreciate your support in keeping Math Circle both accessible and sustainable!

(So, for example, if you cancel after the 2nd week of a 10-week term, you would be refunded 85% of the tuition for weeks 3-10.) The retained fees will go towards covering finance charges and administrative time.
You can choose to use 100% of the pro-rated tuition for the remaining classes as credit toward future Math Circle classes or camps. (So, for example, if you cancel after the 2nd week of a 10-week term, you could use 100% of the tuition for weeks 3-10 as credit toward future registration.)
