About SF Math Circle

SF Math Circle is an extracurricular math enrichment program affiliated with the Center for Science and Mathematics Education at San Francisco State University. Our mission is to support students from diverse backgrounds in developing their identities as confident, capable mathematical thinkers. We offer after-school classes where students build their problem solving and critical thinking skills by exploring engaging, hands-on puzzles and games in an inclusive, supportive, collaborative environment. SFMC facilitators do not lecture or tutor; they facilitate students’ exploration of mathematical puzzles and games in a way that builds students' confidence and sense of agency.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate interactive mathematical activities for groups of 4-6 elementary school students

  • Participate in staff orientation meetings as well as weekly activity prep, which includes staff prep meetings and self-directed prep

  • Foster a supportive and collaborative learning environment by promoting teamwork and a growth mindset-oriented approach

Qualifications

  • Availability that matches the SFMC class / camp schedule

  • Enthusiasm for learning in general and problem solving and critical thinking in particular

  • Ability to build strong relationships with elementary and / or middle school-age children

  • Capacity to be responsible, reliable, flexible, and resilient

  • Growth mindset

A math background is not required, but applicants should enjoy puzzles, games, problem solving, and critical thinking.

Preference will be given to applicants who are planning to become K-12 teachers, and this is a great opportunity for future teachers:

  • You'll get first-hand experience interacting with students in a supportive environment
  • You'll have the opportunity to develop your teaching practices and strategies
  • You'll have the opportunity to learn about SF Math Circle's distinctive approach to STEM pedagogy

Facilitators earn at least $20 per hour for all instructional and development time, with opportunities for promotions and raises.
